GEORGE WHITESIDES, PhD Woodford L. and Ann A. Flowers University Professor, Harvard University Co-Founder, Director and Chair of the Scientific Advisory Board Dr. George Whitesides joined Harvard’s Department of Chemistry in 1982 and served as Department Chairman from 1986 to 1989. Prior to joining Harvard, he was a member of the faculty of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology from 1963 to 1982. His present research interests include physical and organic chemistry, materials science, biophysics, complexity and emergence, surface science, microfluidics, optics, self-assembly, micro- and nanotechnology, science for developing economies, catalysis, energy production and conservation, origin of life, rational drug design, cell-surface biochemistry, simplicity and infochemistry. Dr. Whitesides has held advisory positions on the National Research Council, National Science Foundation, and the Department of Defense’s Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), and is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, and the American Philosophical Society, among other organizations. He has received dozens of honors, including the American Chemical Society (ACS) Award in Pure Chemistry (1975), the Arthur C. Cope Award (1995), the DARPA Award for Significant Technical Achievement (1996), the National Medal of Science (1998), the Von Hippel Award (2000), the Kyoto Prize (2003), the Dan David Award (2005), the Welch Award (2005), the Priestley Award (2007), the American Institute of Chemists Gold Medal (2007), the Prince of Asturias Foundation Award (2008), the Nanoscience Prize (2008), the Wheland Medal (2008), and the Benjamin Franklin Medal in Chemistry (2009). Dr. Whitesides is a co-founder of companies with a combined market capitalization of over $20 billion, including Genzyme, GelTex, and Theravance. Professor Whitesides’ more recent ventures include Surface Logix, Arsenal Medical (formerly WMR Biomedical), and Nano Terra, Inc. He received an A.B. from Harvard University in 1960 and a Ph.D. from the California Institute of Technology in 1964. Back to Top »
CARMICHAEL ROBERTS, PhD General Partner, North Bridge Venture Partners Co-Founder, Director and Chair of the Board of Directors Currently General Partner at North Bridge Venture Partners, Dr. Roberts is a long-term commercial and scientific collaborator of Professor George Whitesides’ at Harvard University. He has co-founded Surface Logix, Nano Terra, and Arsenal Medical with Professor Whitesides, and has served in an executive capacity for each company. Dr. Roberts serves on the advisory boards for MIT's Deshpande Center for Innovation, Harvard's Nanoscale Science and Engineering Center, and Duke's School of Biomedical Engineering. Dr. Roberts was born in Queens, NY, and received his B.S. and Ph.D. in organic chemistry from Duke University and he was a National Science Foundation Fellow at Harvard University's Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology. He also has an M.B.A. from the MIT Sloan School of Management. In 1999, Dr. Roberts was named by MIT's Technology Review Magazine as one of the world's top 100 young entrepreneurs, the TR100. HAYAT SINDI, PhD Visiting Scholar, Harvard University Co-Founder, Director and Chair of International Science and Business Affairs Currently a Visiting Scholar at Harvard University, with Professor George Whitesides at the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology, Dr. Sindi’s primary objective and focus is to develop and deploy technology to developing areas of the world to improve healthcare. Dr. Sindi founded Sonoptix Technology, Cambridge, UK with Saudi Arabian seed funding. Dr. Sindi led the development of a cost effective measurement technology for application in clinical diagnostics. Later she was appointed as Senior Research Scientist for Biotechnology at Schlumberger Cambridge Research Centre and Honorary Research Fellow at the School of Biological and Chemical Science, Exeter University. Dr. Sindi is a member of British Top Young Researcher at House of Commons. She was awarded the Young Professional Award by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Arab Student Organization (MIT-ASO). She was also chosen to address King Abdullah Ben Abdul Aziz at the National Dialogue Forum in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Dr. Sindi earned her Ph.D from Cambridge University, where she was appointed as Senior Lecturer at the International school of Medicine, specializing in Pre-Clinical Education and Public Affairs of Cambridge Overseas Medical Programme. ISAAC KOHLBERG, MBA Senior Associate Provost, Harvard University Currently Mr. Kohlberg serves as the Senior Associate Provost, Chief Technology Development Officer for Harvard University. Previously, he served as CEO of the Tel Aviv University Economic Corporation and CEO of its technology transfer organization, and as Vice Provost of NYU and Vice Dean for Industrial Liaison and Research Administration at the NYU School of Medicine. From 1982 to 1989, Mr. Kohlberg was CEO of the YEDA Research and Development Company, the technology transfer company of the Weizmann Institute of Science. Prior to cofounding Nano Terra in 2005, Mr. Berlow was President for Global Marketing Solutions, AOL Time Warner, where he oversaw account services, operations, and the number one interactive marketing sales force in the industry. Mr. Berlow directed Interactive Marketing sales across all America Online, Inc. brands and services, growing advertising and commerce revenues from zero to $3 billion. WILLIAM A. HOLODNAK, MBA Founder and President, J. Robert Scott Currently the President of J. Robert Scott, in addition to managing the firm since its inception in 1986, Bill conducts senior level search assignments in a variety of industries including For-Profit Education, Biotechnology, Medical Devices, Financial Services, and Technology. Prior to joining J. Robert Scott, Bill was a Vice President of a retainer-based executive search firm which serviced the Venture Capital and High Technology industries on a national basis. Previously, he was a member of the professional audit staff of PricewaterhouseCoopers’ Boston office and holds a CPA certificate in Massachusetts. Before joining PWC, Bill successfully managed the Brattle Theatre in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Bill holds an MBA from Boston University (1976) as well as a graduate degree in Medieval History from The Johns Hopkins University (1971). JOSHUA BOGER, PhD Founder and CEO (retired), Vertex Pharmaceuticals IncorporatedDr. Joshua Boger is the founder of Vertex Pharmaceuticals Incorporated (NASDAQ: VRTX). He retired as Vertex’s Chief Executive Officer in May 2009, after over 20-years with the company. He continues to serve on the Vertex Board. Prior to founding Vertex in 1989, Dr. Boger held the position of Senior Director of Basic Chemistry at Merck Sharp & Dohme Research Laboratories in Rahway, N.J., where he headed both the Departments of Biophysical Chemistry and Medicinal Chemistry of Immunology & Inflammation. During his ten years at Merck, Dr. Boger developed an international reputation as a leader in the application of computer modeling to the chemistry of drug design and was a pioneer in the use of structure-based rational drug design as the basis for drug discovery programs. Dr. Boger holds a bachelor of arts in Chemistry and Philosophy from Wesleyan University (Connecticut) and a master's and doctorate degrees in Chemistry from Harvard University. His postdoctoral research in molecular recognition was performed in the laboratories of the Nobel-prize winning chemist, Jean-Marie Lehn in Strasbourg, France. He is the author of over 50 scientific publications, holds 31 issued U.S. patents in pharmaceutical discovery and development, and has lectured widely in the United States, in Europe and in Asia on various aspects of drug discovery and development. UNA RYAN, OBE, PhD, DSc CEO, Diagnostics For AllDr. Ryan is the current CEO of Diagnostics For All and was formerly the President and CEO of AVANT Immunotherapeutics, Inc., a publicly traded biopharmaceutical company developing vaccines. Dr. Ryan is also Research Professor of Medicine at Boston University School of Medicine and serves on its Board of Visitors. She serves on a number of boards including Waltham Technologies Inc., AMRI Global, IQuum, the Business Advisory Board of BIO Ventures for Global Health, the Scientific Advisory Board of Genocea, Inc. She is past Chair of the Massachusetts Biotechnology Council, served on its Board (1996-2008), as well as the Board of the Biotechnology Industry Organization. She is a member of the Massachusetts Life Sciences Collaborative Leadership Council, and the Climate Change and Green Energy Council. Dr. Ryan holds a Ph.D. in Cellular and Molecular Biology from Cambridge University and BS degrees in Zoology, Microbiology and Chemistry from Bristol University. She received an Honorary Doctor of Science Degree from Bristol University in 2009. She was a Howard Hughes Investigator, NIH MERIT Awardee and an Established Investigator of the American Heart Association. In 2007, she received the Albert Einstein Award for outstanding achievement in the life sciences and was the recipient of the Cartier Women’s Initiative Award in 2009. In 2002 Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II awarded her the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for her services to the research, development and promotion of biotechnology.
